The 30th anniversary of the Academic Year




Cambodia’s Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Lok Chumteav Men Sam An presides over here on Thursday the 30th anniversary of the Academic Year (Sept. 24, 1979-Sept. 24, 2009).

Addressing the ceremony, Lok Chumteav Men Sam An recalled the first academic year situation in 1979 after the downfall of Khmer Rouge genocidal regime, in which Cambodia educational field faced with the untold difficulties such as lack of school materials and human resources and there were only some 500,000 students and 20,000 teachers in the countrywide.

In this 2008-2009 academic year, the students’ figures have reached over 2,000,000 and 45,000 teachers.


A working meeting to review the Implementation of Land Road Traffic Law



The Ministry of Interior opens a working meeting here on September 23 to review the Implementation of Land Road Traffic Law under the presidency of H.E. Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior with the participation of the Minister of Information H.E. Khieu Kanharith; Minister of Transport and Public Works H.E. Tram Iv Tek and representatives of other relevant institutions.

According to the meeting’s report, the traffic police have seized 94,183 motorbikes and 1,136 vehicles, which have violated the traffic law.

Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin meets with Tran Dinh Dan, member of standing board of Vietnamese parliament here on September 23, during which the discussion focused on enhancing the bilateral cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

In the meeting, the Vietnamese guest told the Cambodian national president of a bilateral talk between the office of Vietnamese parliament and the general secretariat of the Cambodian national assembly, the purpose of which he said is to reach an agreement on cooperation in exchanging visit and improving the capacity of the parliamentary officials of the two countries.

Phnom Penh governor gives a souvenir gift to Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam



Phnom Penh governor Kep Chutema gives a souvenir gift to Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong following a meeting between them held here on September 22.

In the meeting, the municipality governor told Truong Vinh Trong, who also is a chairman of the national committee for drug, prostitution and HIV/AIDS prevention and control of Vietnam, of the issues relating to the crackdown on a clandestine drug production, the drug trafficking and distribution and the setting up of detoxification centers. He also asked Vietnam to help build a building for treating drug users in Phnom Penh.

In reply, the Vietnamese deputy prime minister made his pledge to convey the municipality governor’s request to Vietnamese high-level officials for discussion and consideration, and respond to it later.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Keat Chhon, minister of Economy and Finance meets here on Tuesday with Mr. Wang Lijun, General Manager of Overseas Business Management Department, Bank of China Ltd.

On the occasion, Mr. Wang Lijun told Cambodian leader that his visit to Cambodia is to conduct a study on the country’s current conditions and investment environment in order to pave the way for his bank to make the exploitation in Cambodia in the near future.

A signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding on Rubber Plantation Investment Cooperation between Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was signed here on September 22 by H.E. Chan Sarun, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia and H.E. Cao Duc Phat, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam.

Under the freshly signed MoU, Cambodia and Vietnam will create a favorable environment for rubber growing and processing in Cambodia, especially in technology transfer, transport of materials and provision of equipment.

H.E. Khieu Kanharith warmly receives a US veteran journalist



Cambodian Minister of Information H.E. Khieu Kanharith warmly receives here Wednesday morning Mr. Carl Robinson, a US veteran journalist who is currently working for AP and Newsweek.

During the meeting, Mr. Carl Robinson told Cambodian minister that he wishes to gather veteran journalists who have experienced in US-Vietnam war as well as war in Cambodia to visit Cambodia.

In reply, H.E. Khieu Kanharith welcomed Mr. Robinson’s initiative and asked him to provide the names of those journalists who died in Cambodian war so as to request the Phnom Penh City Hall to erect a memorial stupa for them.

His Majesty Preah Bath Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia backs home Monday afternoon after spending more than two-week medical check-up in the People’s Republic of China.

The Cambodian monarch was warmly greeted on his arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport by Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Thomma Pothisal Chea Sim, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, senators, parliamentarians and other high-ranking government officials.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also asked Vietnamese side to help build a rehabilitation center in Cambodia for Cambodian drug addicts because Vietnamese side have more experience and abilities in dealing with drug cases.

2nd GMS Economic corridors Forum




Ministers from the six nations sharing the Mekong River, meets here on September 16 in an effort to eliminate cross-border barriers to development that are impeding the countries’ economic growth.

During a two-day (Sept. 16-17) Economic Corridors Forum, senior government ministers have discussed concrete measures to address inadequate infrastructure, policy and logistical bottlenecks, and skill deficits along the three major economic corridors joining the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries of Cambodia, People’s Republic of China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The opening ceremony to mark the first International Democracy Day




Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhear Chakrei Heng Samrin presides over here on September 15 the opening ceremony to mark the first International Democracy Day in the Kingdom of Cambodia 15th September with the theme “Democracy and Political Tolerance”, after it was adopted by the UN General Assembly in July 2007.

The event has attracted some 200 guests and representatives from senate, parliament, civil society and international community.

Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Thomma Pothisal Chea Sim together with his family members and other senior officials offers food to the Buddhist monks at Prek Praing pagoda at Kandal province’s Ponhear Leu district during day 9th of Kan Ben ceremony on September 13.

On the occasion, Samdech Chea Sim also donated 25 million Riels (Cambodian Currency) roughly USD 6, 200 plus USD 2,000 to the Buddhist monks for the ceremony’s expenditure.

A 981 meter-long by 13 meter-wide Prek Kdam Bridge crossing Tonle Sap River was being built since June 2007 by loan from China with the amount of USD 30,866,594. So far, the construction work has completed some 89% and is expected to be finished in April 2010.

Addressing on the occasion, Cambodian premier expressed thanks to the ambassador of China for her efforts and Chinese government for providing loan to construct the bridge, which will contribute to the Cambodia’s development as well as Cambodian people’s poverty reduction.

A Reproductive Health Association for Cambodia (RHAC) holds a summarize meeting in Preah Sihanouk province on September 11 to review its works in 2009 and set up the new action plans for 2010 under the presidency of H.E Chev Kimheng, Preah Sihanouk province’s deputy governor.

According to the reports, RHAC has been implementing the 6-program project across the villages and health centers in Preah Shihanouk province such as the youth health program, HIV/AIDS program for vulnerable people, health program for workers at factories and enterprises, health support service program, the HIV/AIDS patient service at home and equity fund program for the poor people.
